New Staff Highlight: Luis

In January, SustainEd Farms welcomed Luis as our second full-time Bilingual Programming Coordinator. This role allows SustainEd Farms to be responsive to the language needs of the communities we work within, making sure that students feel a sense of belonging as they are taught in the language of their heart. We were excited to retain Luis after his seasonal contract ended as he brings a wealth of knowledge and has a knack for bringing joy wherever he goes.

1. This will be your second season with SEF - what are you most looking forward to this growing season?

  • Technically, this is my first full growing season. I am excited to officially be part of the seed and seedling planting with the kids and being part of the full cycle, I’m excited!

2. Who or what made you want to get into farming/gardening?

  • You all. Being here has inspired me to grow my knowledge, foster my advocacy for food justice. I have been an advocate for environmental justice for awhile but now I'm learning and focusing on food justice specifically.

3. Is there a food or dish that makes you feel connected to your family/friends?

  • Pupusas. They are so yummy! My mom learned how to make them from my grandmother because she’s Salvadorian and my mom is Mexican so it was a beautiful cross cultural connection. Then when I was a veggie/vegan she would make squash and cheese pupusas and those were really really yummy!

4. What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long day?

  • Just feeling the sun on my skin, listening to music, and a walk to the gym are some of my favorites.

5. If you could swap places with an inanimate object for a day what would it be? Why?

  • Beach sand because I wouldn't be stuck to one location. I could move to different beaches throughout my lifetime.

    • Is there a particular beach or place in the world you would want to start at?

      • Somewhere in Southeast Asia. I haven’t been there but it seems beautiful.
