High School Internship

Standards-aligned garden education that connects food, health, and the environment.

High School Programming

With our high school students, SustainEd Farms supports and guides them in an internship, most of which occur over the summer. Student interns get exposure to urban agriculture and green career pathways while exploring related topics of interest in-depth.

We make sure to adapt our lessons and programs for a high school audience, expanding on the complexity of food systems and sustainable practices. Throughout the internship, students complete modules that help them reflect on their experiences with food systems, interact with what they’ve learned in new ways, and expand on advanced topics with a new perspective.

What Our Internship Offers:

Community Engagement

We bring our high school interns on weekly excursions with local partners, including City Floral, CSU Spur, and We Don’t Waste, which gives them the opportunity to engage with a variety of different organizations that work towards food security in different ways.

In addition, our interns help run our farm stand at Huerta Urbana, a local, pay-what-you-can farmer’s market run by Focus Points Family Resource Center. This helps them to see firsthand the impact that local produce can have on their communities. Not only this, but students are also able to utilize their own skills in a new environment, such as bilingualism or customer service.

Growing Knowledge

Near the end of their internship, our high schoolers complete their final project and share what they’ve learned with the SustainEd Farms community. Students in the past have made incredible art projects, written poetry, performed independent research, and so much more!

We’re always very excited to see the new and creative ways our interns are able to synthesize what they’ve learned, and how they can apply it to their future goals.

Program Outcomes

This internship provides students not only with access to green career pathways, but also with chances to engage with their communities in new and unique ways. It provides a wonderful experience for teens ready to take the next step in their lives towards adulthood and gives them the chance to see what a career in outdoor education can look like for them.

What Students are Saying:

“I truly enjoyed every moment. This opportunity was a huge help to me—not only financially, but also professionally, personally, and emotionally. My mental and physical health have improved tremendously. Every day of hard work was a great learning experience and helped me grow. I’m grateful for the opportunity and for being able to see what I can accomplish with my own hands. I really enjoyed planting, harvesting, watering, and everything else I did in my garden.”

- Former George Washington High School Intern

“One of the things I enjoyed most about the internship was making friends with people from other schools and getting to know Maya and Monse. I liked spending time in the garden watering the plants and doing other things in the school garden, and I’d love to do it again—even if I’m not part of the internship—to help the school with planting or watering.”

- Former Bruce Randolph High School Intern
